Traditional craftsmanship: Easter bunnies from the Ore Mountains

Not only the Christmas wooden art from the Erzgebirge has a long tradition, but also the Erzgebirge Easter bunnies and Easter decorations. If at the emergence of the Erzgebirge craftsmanship in the 18th century initially only Christmas motifs were made, more and more wood carvers wanted to make their product portfolio attractive in other seasons as well.

To this day, it is uncertain exactly when Easter figurines and Easter bunnies began to be made in the Erzgebirge or gained economic importance. Many traditional handicraft enterprises probably started to produce wooden Easter bunnies and Easter decorations on an increasing scale at the beginning of the 20th century.

In Erzgebirge handicraft enterprises, both Christmas and Easter decorations are lovingly handmade. For wooden Easter bunnies from the Erzgebirge, the body of the Easter bunny is turned and the small parts such as ears or legs are carved. Occasionally, the complete Erzgebirge Easter bunny is also turned, which is a special challenge.

Why exactly the Easter Bunny brings the eggs at Easter is not entirely clear.

What is certain is that the Easter hare was a symbol of Jesus Christ in Byzantine animal symbolism. In addition, the Easter bunny is still considered a symbol of fertility today, as it has a strong mating behavior. Thus, the idea of the emergence of human and animal life fits perfectly with the Easter season, that is, with the resurrection of Jesus. Incidentally, until the 17th century in the regions of Germany and Europe, different animals brought the eggs at Easter, such as the stork, fox or rooster.

In the Erzgebirge you will find not only traditional Easter bunnies from the Erzgebirge, but also modern interpretations. Whether you are looking for the classic model of the Easter bunny couple on the bench or the fancy motif "Easter bunny in a racing car" - the Easter bunny according to Erzgebirge tradition is now available in almost every imaginable variation. The wooden Easter bunnies are also ideal as a gift, because you can choose the Easter bunny according to the profession or favorite occupation of the recipient.

Special highlight: the head of the Easter bunny from the Ore Mountains traditionally has an egg shape - so the symbolism of eggs is always present.

What do Easter eggs have to do with spring?

The Easter egg is also a symbol of new life anchored in many religions. The egg, inconspicuous from the outside, hides a chick inside that steadily gains strength and finally breaks the shell of the egg. Until the chick is ripe for it, the eggshell protects it from outside influences. The egg becomes a symbol of Jesus Christ, who was believed dead, finally gained new strength and rose from the dead. In addition, eggs became popular at Easter because, according to Christian custom, all animal products such as meat and eggs were forbidden during Lent. Nevertheless, the hens continued to lay eggs during this period. Therefore, they were hard-boiled for preservation until Easter Sunday and eaten with great pleasure on that day after a long abstinence.

Why Easter eggs are hidden?

The origin of this custom is not fully understood. According to one legend, the custom possibly goes back to the pagan fertility goddess Ostara. Since her symbol was the egg, the Germanic tribes gave eggs as gifts in homage to her. However, this pagan tradition was banned by the Christian Church. Since the people wanted to continue the custom, eggs were no longer visibly given away in public, but hidden in secret for friends and family.

Easter eggs from the Ore Mountains - then and now

Nowadays, Easter eggs are not only hidden, but also used as Easter decorations for the Easter bush. Instead of real eggs, we in the Erzgebirge also rely on wood for Easter eggs. The raw material wood emphasizes the originality of the eggs and turns a fragile Easter egg into a robust one that can be safely preserved. In addition, our wooden Easter eggs are far more stylish and high quality than plastic eggs. Since Easter is a holiday associated with many customs, Erzgebirge wood art is an ideal fit for the Feast of the Resurrection. Especially popular are our finely decorated Easter eggs from the Erzgebirge, which are painted in detailed handwork.

Not only in the choice of motifs, but also in the color scheme, the craftsmen show themselves traditional and modern at the same time: with unpainted Easter eggs and Easter bunnies, you can see the different natural wood patterning in each piece; colorful accents, on the other hand, come into play with painted wood Easter decorations.
